Honor Magic V Launched as the Most Powerful Folding Phone Yet

Honor has unveiled its first folding phone, which will compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Oppo Find N. The Honor Magic V is also the most powerful folding phone to date, as it is the first to be equipped with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

Design and Display

The main screen on the inside is a 7.9-inch foldable OLED panel that, unlike some other foldable phones on the market, can close completely flat. It has a refresh rate of 90Hz, a resolution of 2272 x 1984, HDR10+ support, 10-bit colours, and a peak brightness of 800 nits. When using two apps side by side, the 10.3:9 aspect ratio divides the two sides of the screen into an almost 21:9 aspect ratio.

The cover screen is a 6.45-inch display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a resolution of 2560 x 1080. Honor has made certain that its aspect ratio (21:9) is similar to that of a standard smartphone, making typing and other everyday tasks much easier.

Internals and Storage

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC is paired with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage options, but no microSD card slot is available for expansion. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, like its predecessors, likes to burn hot, and it remains to be seen how well Honor has managed to control its thermals.

In terms of software, the phone runs Android 12 on top of Magic UI 6.0, which has been optimised for foldable phones. The phone will also include Google apps, particularly the Play Store (unlike Huawei phones), implying that it will be available in Pakistan as well.

Cameras

Honor has made no compromises in the camera department, with all three lenses on the back being 50MP shooters. There’s a 50MP main lens, a 50MP ultrawide lens, and a 50MP “colour spectrum” lens, whatever that is. We’ll know more once we get our hands on a review unit.

The punch-hole cutouts on the cover and main screens both house the same 42MP selfie shooter.

Battery and Pricing

The onboard 4,750 mAh battery supports 67W fast charging, the fastest on a folding phone to date. This technology can charge a dead battery to 50% capacity in just 15 minutes. There is also reverse charging support if you need to use the phone as a power bank.

The Honor Magic V is priced similarly to its rivals, at $1570 for the base model. It will come in Titanium Silver, Black, and Burnt Orange colours. Honor has yet to make a decision on an international launch.
