Smartphone Users Exceed 2G Mobile Users For First Time Ever

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) annual report for 2021, smartphone users have surpassed 2G mobile phone users for the first time.

Smartphones accounted for 52 percent of the market in 2021, compared to 48 percent of 2G phone users, according to the survey. Users of 2G phones accounted for 60% of the market share in 2017.

When it comes to mobile phone assembly in the country, the number of 2G devices made remained larger than smartphones last year. In 2021, over 14.6 million 2G devices will be built, compared to 10 million smartphones.

Mobile phone imports fell to 10 million in 2021, compared to 24.6 million made locally. In 2020, the number of mobile phones imported was estimated to be 24.5 million.

Last year, the number of broadband users surpassed 100 million, reaching 102.7 million, contributing significantly to the telecom sector’s revenue growth.

Access to telecom and ICT services, on the other hand, grew last year, with approximately 89 percent of the country’s population now having access.

Mobile broadband is presently available to 49% of the population. In 2021, the amount of broadband data used increased by 52% to 6,855 petabytes. As a result, the telecom sector’s revenue shattered all records last year, reaching Rs. 644 billion.

Furthermore, in 2021, 30 firms, including Samsung, were granted licences to manufacture phones in the country, which will result in the creation of hundreds of thousands of employment in the long run.

Finally, last year saw a significant increase in digital financial inclusion, with the number of active mobile wallets reaching 46 million, up 72 percent from 26.7 million in 2020. Similarly, in 2021, the number of active mobile wallet agents increased by 35%.
