Smartphones Will Beat DSLR Cameras by 2024: Sony

Sony smartphones aren’t as popular as they once were, but they still feature some of the greatest cameras on the market. Sony is also a prominent supplier of smartphone cameras, with major clients like Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others.

In a few years, according to a new study from Nikkei Asia, Sony’s recent breakthrough in smartphone camera technology would allow handsets to rival and even outperform DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

Terushi Shimizu, President, and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions (SSS), stated during a recent press conference:

Within the next few years, still, photos will surpass the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras.

According to the briefing, smartphone camera quality will surpass DSLR and other professional cameras in 2024.

The Xperia Pro I, a phone featuring the world’s largest smartphone camera sensor, was already released by Sony. The phone’s camera sensor is a 1-inch 20MP sensor.

Because of the distance between the lens and the sensor, Sony’s premium phones often use 12MP sensors. Phone camera sensors, on the other hand, do not need to grow large enough to compete with DSLR units, as smaller sensors will soon be able to catch more light. Although it is unknown whether this technology will be widely adopted, it has already been seen in Sony’s top mirrorless cameras.

Sony has also mentioned AI improvements for smartphones, which will push the boundaries of multi-frame HDR, longer-range zoom, and higher-quality video recording.

Companies have hit a saturation point with smartphone cameras, therefore there have been no significant developments in the last few years. It’ll be intriguing to see how Sony manages to live up to its boasts, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise given the company’s reputation for high-quality cameras.
