PTA Chairman Addresses Digital Pakistan Roundtable at GSMA Mobile World Congress

Maj. Gen. (R) Amir Azeem Bajwa, Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), spoke at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona at the ‘Whole-of-Government Digital Pakistan Roundtable.’

He delivered an overview of Pakistan’s digital profile, emphasising the connectivity situation in relation to telecom investment opportunities.

Chairman Bajwa emphasised the importance of key regulatory interventions for the industry and consumers, such as cellular licence renewal and spectrum auction, spectrum rationalisation, a 5G roadmap, fiberization of backhaul, IoT framework, quality of service up-gradation, and so on.

He also discussed the PTA’s efforts to promote women and girls’ digital inclusion in ICTs, as well as the positive impact of Pakistan’s Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).

During the roundtable, issues like as tax reform and the industry’s financial stability were also discussed.

It was agreed that the industry will get all available support in the form of sensible policy and regulatory interventions in order to address profitability issues and attract more investment.

A common declaration was released at the end of the roundtable to reaffirm support to the Government of Pakistan’s ‘Digital Pakistan Vision.’

The GSMA organised the roundtable, which was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, the USF, the FAB, and industry CEOs.
