Xiaomi’s Future Smartphones Will Have an All-Screen Fingerprint Scanner

Fingerprint scanners have always been one of the most useful features of a smartphone. There are a variety of phones with under-display or in-display fingerprint scanners available in all price ranges.

The optical in-display fingerprint readers have already progressed to their fourth or fifth generation and are now nearly as reliable and quick as capacitive readers. However, according to recent rumours from China, a new generation of fingerprint scanners is in the works.

According to Chinese media, Xiaomi has recently received the patent for an all-screen fingerprint scanning technology, which expands the scanning area by allowing the user to utilise the fingerprint sensor on any portion of the display.

Xiaomi has even demonstrated the fundamental mechanism that powers this revolutionary technology. It operates by recording the fingerprint’s reflected light through the pixels. As a result, when you touch the phone’s screen, the display illuminates to reveal the fingerprint.

When the data reaches the infrared light receivers after coming into touch with the fingertip, it is utilised to map out the contour of the fingerprint, which is then compared to your registered fingerprint details to determine if the user is the same as the one saved. If a match is found, the user will be able to unlock his smartphone from any section of the screen!

Previously, Huawei filed a similar patent for their own all-screen fingerprint technology in numerous areas, including China, Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea, and India, in August 2020.
